Seminar on Epistemological Challenges

12.11.2025 15:15

The Section "Manuscript Cultures" is organizing a seminar on epistemological challenges in the study of the relationship between script and word, focusing on canonical texts and their commentarial tradition.

Dear Colleagues,

the seminar for the doctoral school will take place on November 12th in the Jura Soyfer Saal from 15:15 to 18:00 (with a break).

I would please ask those of you who are interested in partecipating to get in touch with me by October 27th: nicla.de.zorzi@univie.ac.at

The subject of the seminar is as follows:

"In this workshop we discuss the particular philological and epistemological challenges in interpreting manuscript texts with particular attention to the relationship between language and script. In particular, we examine these challenges with respect to logographic writing systems, with the specific example of ancient Chinese (no prior knowledge of the language necessary). Following from there, we broaden the discussion to consider the specific conditions and social circumstances under which interpretation is even possible (with reference to Stanley E. Fish's notion of "interpretive communities") and how canonical texts and commentarial traditions developed hand in hand. To some extent, the case of the Chinese classics is particularly interesting because it marks the outer boundaries of hermeneutical procedures where interpretation is not merely a procedure conducted on a stable text but constitutes that very stability in the first place."

Prof. Kern sent me three readings to share with those who are interested in joining - I will upload them on moodle shortly - and asks partecipants to suggest two readings from their own field that relate to the seminar's themes (e.g. relationship between language and script; notion of "interpretive communities"; canonical texts and commentaries).

All the Best,

Nicla De Zorzi
