Admission to the Doctoral Programme & Registration for the DocSchool PhilKult

There are three ways to complete a regular doctoral programme in the Humanities at the University of Vienna. While all doctoral students must complete the compulsory courses and all elements of the doctoral programme, their path to a successful doctorate differs in terms of funding, access to the programmes of the Doctoral School of Philological and Cultural Studies and eligibility to apply for the funding opportunities of our doctoral school.

1. Funded doctoral candidates and the DocSchool PhilKult

Doctoral candidates with a position at the University of Vienna (university funded, third-party funded) benefit from the support structure of the Doctoral School PhilKult, can participate in the Doctoral School workshops and take part in peer activities or organise them themselves. In addition, they are encouraged to apply for the various funding programmes of our DocSchool.

Required steps:
1. application for an open position
2. application for admission to the doctoral programme in the Humanities
3. registration for the DocSchool PhilKult

2. Self-supporting doctoral candidates at the DocSchool PhilKult

All doctoral students of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies and the Centre for Translation Studies can apply for admission to the DocSchool PhilKult. Candidates of the doctoral school are expected to participate in its activities and to pass the public presentation ('FöP') of their project within the first year. They will benefit from the supervision structure of the Doctoral School for Philological and Cultural Studies, participate in its workshops and organise/participate in peer activities. They are also encouraged to take advantage of the various support programmes offered by our DocSchool. It can support students without a doctoral position at the University of Vienna in their efforts to obtain funding for their dissertation project from other sources.

Required steps:
1. application for admission to the doctoral programme in the Humanities
2. registration for the DocSchool PhilKult

3. Doctoral candidates who are not members of the DocSchool PhilKult

At the University of Vienna, it is possible to complete a doctoral programme in the Humanities and Cultural Studies without being a member of the DocSchool PhilKult. Please note, however, that many offers, services and financial resources are only available to members of our doctoral school.
