Dear Colleagues,
the symposium "Narratives of the Captive Wild: Zoos and Aquariums in History, Architecture and Literature", organised by the Department of Portuguese of the Institut für Romanistik is fast approaching, and we are happy to invite you to join us for this afternoon of interdisciplinary discussion and exchange.
The event will take place on 20 November, from 13:30 to 19:00, at Alte Kapelle, University of Vienna.
Over the course of the day, we will explore the complex histories and cultural meanings of zoos and aquariums as institutions of science and spectacle, sites of captivity and conservation, and enduring symbols of humanity's relationship with the natural world. Scholars from diverse fields will approach these questions through historical, literary, and architectural lenses, opening a space for dialogue about how narratives of the "captive wild" continue to shape our understanding of nature, modernity, and care.

das Symposium „Narratives of the Captive Wild: Zoos and Aquariums in History, Architecture and Literature", organisiert vomInstitut für Romanistik, Abteilung Portugiesisch, rückt näher, und wir freuen uns, Sie zu einem Nachmittag des interdisziplinären Austauschs und der Diskussion einladen zu dürfen.
Die Veranstaltung findet am 20. November von 13:30 bis 19:00 Uhr in der Alten Kapelle der Universität Wien statt.
Im Laufe des Tages werden wir die komplexen Geschichten und kulturellen Bedeutungen von Zoos und Aquarien erkunden – als Institutionen der Wissenschaft und des Spektakels, als Orte von Gefangenschaft und Bewahrung sowie als dauerhafte Symbole der Beziehung des Menschen zur natürlichen Welt. Forschende aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen werden diese Themen aus historischen, literarischen und architektonischen Perspektiven beleuchten und damit einen Raum für den Dialog darüber eröffnen, wie Narrative des „gefangenen Wilden" weiterhin unser Verständnis von Natur, Moderne und Fürsorge prägen.
