The two workshops are complementary but independent: you are welcome to attend only one of them, though participating in both will be especially beneficial.

Dates and abstracts

Workshop 1:

Analyzing Multilingual and Multicultural Identities from an educational and postcolonial perspective

Date: 09.12.2025 – 1pm to 3pm (Seminarraum 4 341 Porzellangasse 4 3.OG)

This workshop will explore how discourse analysis can be used to examine the construction of multilingual and multicultural identities through a critical multicultural education and postcolonial lens, as applied in the MINTED project (Multilingual and Intercultural Education in Sweden and Finland). Participants will engage with key concepts such as essentialist and non-essentialist views of identity, power relations, and cultural representation in national curricula and teacher discourse.

Workshop 2:

Appraisal Analysis Framework for Evaluative Language

Date: 10.12.2025 – 10am to 12pm ("Durchgangsbesprechungsraum 1. Stock" Porzellangasse 4. 1.OG)

This workshop will introduce the basics of the Appraisal Analysis framework, providing an overview of its principles and applications. Participants will learn how to apply this framework in conjunction with qualitative and quantitative coding in Atlas.ti, using an example of evaluative language analysis related to multilingualism in interviews with pre-primary and primary school teachers. The analysis will draw on data from an international study conducted by researchers from eight countries (France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK). Using real interview data, participants will gain hands-on experience in applying the Appraisal Analysis framework themselves.
